Aston Villa player ratings as fans have their say on Premier League loss at Liverpool

0 4

Aston Villa threw away their four-match winning run in the Premier League by gifting Liverpool a pair of goals in a 2-0 loss at Anfield on Saturday.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Liverpool v Villa player ratings

Emiliano Martínez – 3.3

There’s no excusing Liverpool’s first goal and Villa’s goalkeeper was the player at the heart of it. Whether its ultimate cause was one of tactics or execution, that goal cannot happen. Atrocious.

Matty Cash – 6.0

Cash showed lots of his defensive ability with the game level in the first half and hit the crossbar with a powerful deflected shot. Less spectacular than the previous outing but his two-way game was on display again.

Ezri Konsa – 6.5 – Joint MOTM

Imperfect, certainly, but Konsa had no direct culpability in Villa’s downfall at Anfield. His one-on-one defending was good and he was willing to put his body on the line to keep Liverpool out.

Pau Torres – 5.0

There was some good and some bad from Torres but he was surprisingly untested in terms of hands-on defending. I still haven’t decided how much he was or wasn’t at fault for the first goal.

Lucas Digne – 4.3

Mohamed Salah was the first winger for months to have the upper hand over Digne and it looked like a mismatch from the start. A difficult evening for the Villa left-back.

Amadou Onana – 5.8

Rare is the game when Onana outshines Boubacar Kamara but his work out of possession at Anfield was impressive. A few passes went astray but broadly I had Onana slightly higher than a 5.8 grade.

Boubacar Kamara – 5.5

Kamara had an uncharacteristically quiet evening. I thought he was still really good without the ball but his impact in possession was minimal. There’s better to come from the midfielder.

John McGinn – 5.0

The Villa captain started well, using his physicality throughout the first half, but faded after the first Liverpool goal. He was withdrawn with half an hour to go.

Evann Guessand – 4.3

I gave Guessand a 4/10 and clearly one or two of you went a little higher, but on reflection I think Guessand’s worst game in a Villa shirt probably warranted a tougher mark.

Morgan Rogers – 6.5 – Joint MOTM

Rogers was Villa’s biggest threat from start to finish and produced a typical Rogers performance: high-risk, aggressive, incisive and often dangerous. It’s a shame the rest of Villa’s attackers flipped the script.

Ollie Watkins – 5.0

Villa’s lone striker got a mark or two from me for putting himself about but the truth is this performance and others earlier in the season really haven’t been up to Watkins’ standard. Not having an alternative is becoming a problem.

Substitutes

Donyell Malen – 5.8

Malen got a go in two positions off the bench on Saturday evening, neither of which is the one where he’s actually effective.

Ross Barkley – 6.0

Barkley got a couple of shots away after coming on as a substitute.

Ian Maatsen – 5.5

I gave Maatsen and Barkley the same grade but he was the better of the two. He quickly took to the task of dealing with Salah and a vital defensive header kept Villa alive.

Tyrone Mings – 5.5

Mings did what little work he had to do well enough before he had to leave the field with a hamstring injury that’s expected to keep him out until 2026.

Jadon Sancho – 5.5

Another positive and willing but ultimately low-impact cameo from Villa’s loanee winger.
