Patriots Writer Makes Case To Keep Premium Picks Through Trade Deadline

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday, and the Patriots find themselves in a tricky situation.

New England currently leads the AFC East with a 7-2 record. Most analysts don’t consider it one of the top Super Bowl contenders, as FanDuel has the Patriots’ odds of +2700 to win the Super Bowl on Monday.

The Patriots should consider adding a few more players to their roster before the trade deadline. However, Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard believes they shouldn’t part with premium picks, such as a first- or second-round selection.

“It really depends on the player,” Bedard said on Sunday, talking about not giving up a premium pick for a possible rental, via Patriots on CLNS. “Quite frankly, no. You want a sustainable winner. You don’t want a flash in the pan in one year.”

The Patriots won only four games the previous season, and they didn’t address all their issues during the offseason. While New England is performing well this year, it should consider the future.

If New England trades away a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft for a potential rental and fails to win the Super Bowl, the move could set back its efforts to build a stronger roster.

The Patriots have a bright future, given the way quarterback Drake Maye is playing, and they don’t need to rush things because of their great start.
