Aston Villa star issues clear message over new contract: ‘I love it here’
Matty Cash has signed a new contract with Aston Villa to cap a run of excellent performances that culminated in a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Month award.
Cash was one of Villa’s better performers in a disappointing start to the Premier League season and has continued to improve along with his teammates.
Villa have won four league fixtures in a row and climbed into the top half of the Premier League table but it took them several weeks to get going at the start of 2025/26.
One of the landmark moments was Villa’s first league goal, scored by Cash against Sunderland. His brilliant pass to Lucas Digne helped Villa beat Tottenham Hotspur and a fabulous Cash goal beat Manchester City at Villa Park last Sunday.
The Poland international joined Villa in 2020 and his new deal runs until the summer of 2029 with an option for an extra year.
He’s been heavily criticised by some Villa supporters but is getting credit where it’s due this season. In truth, he’s always been a reliable right-back who’s won and kept the trust of manager Unai Emery since he succeeded Steven Gerrard three years ago.
“It’s been great. I love it here,” Cash told VillaTV.
“I’ve enjoyed every step, had a lot of ups and downs, [but] more highs though, to be honest – especially the last three or four years we’ve done really well, progressed in Europe and had a lot of good experiences together.
Cash is in the form of his career
“Playing at Villa Park is great, the fans are really good, so hopefully many more years.”
The 28-year-old moved to Villa from Nottingham Forest five years ago and has played in more than 150 matches in the Premier League.
Often maligned and usually to an unjustified degree, Cash has locked down a right-back position that lots of supporters have considered a priority in the transfer market but has never been addressed with any meaningful intent by Emery.
Cash has been Emery’s first choice throughout their time together. When he’s been fit and available, he’s been in the side. It’s clear that he listens to Emery’s plans and executes his instructions, and he’s now repaying that faith by finding another gear.
The right-back and his Villa teammates will be in action on Saturday evening when they take on Liverpool in a rare 8.00pm kick-off at Anfield.
