Marco Sturm Explains Why Joonas Korpisalo Got Second Straight Start For Bruins

The Boston Bruins decided to start goalie Joonas Korpisalo for the second straight game, which was a bit of a surprise.

Boston’s starting goalie is Jeremy Swayman, but head coach Marco Sturm opted to turn to Koprisalo again. Sturm’s bold choice ended up paying off as Boston defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in overtime on Thursday.

Following the game, Sturm explained why he decided to give Korpisalo another start.

“I’m very happy for these guys, especially (Marat Khusnutdinov and Korpisalo),” Sturm said, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “‘Korpi’ earned the start, and that’s why we went back to him, and he showed it again today, very good.”

Korpisalo made 37 saves in the win, but he credited his teammates for the win.

Although Korpisalo was stellar in the net, he praised his teammates for playing well in front of him and allowing him to see all the shots.

“I feel pretty good,” Korpisalo said. “Guys in front of me are playing really well, and most of the shots are coming from the outside and not in front of the net, and they’re letting me see the puck.”

Korpisalo improved to 3-3-0 with a 3.49 GAA and a .882 SV% with the win on Thursday.

“That was good,” Korpisalo said of his performance. “Just try to stick with it and do my best out there.”

Boston will return to the ice on Saturday at home against the Carolina Hurricanes.
