9 G/A in 10 games: Man Utd now want to sign £35m striker, who is eyeing January transfer

0 6

Manchester United are interested in signing Levante striker Etta Eyong, as per Mundo Deportivo (page 2).

The Red Devils strengthened their forward department last summer with the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Mbeumo and Sesko have made multiple goal contributions. Cunha recently netted his maiden goal during the 4-2 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

United may seek to add more quality to their attack next year, and Mundo Deportivo claim that the club are keen on landing Eyong’s signature.

Eyong has been outstanding for Levante since his summer switch from Villarreal. The Cameroonian is now keen on finding a new club in January.

The 22-year-old has already played for two teams in Villarreal and Levante. He cannot feature for a third club this term due to FIFA regulations.

Eyong is still prepared to join a new outfit when the transfer window reopens in January. He plans to return to Levante on loan until next summer.

Barcelona are also strongly interested, but they may find it difficult to sign him in January unless they return to the 1:1 spending rule set by La Liga.

Eyong has a £26 million buy-out clause for La Liga-based clubs. The same clause stands at £35 million for Premier League teams, as per Mundo Deportivo.

Eyong could replace Zirkzee at United

Sesko signed for the Red Devils from RB Leipzig last summer. The Slovenian has been a regular starter upfront in the league, scoring a couple of goals.

Cunha has operated as a makeshift number nine when manager Ruben Amorim has opted to bench Sesko. Joshua Zirkzee has been largely kept on the sidelines.

The Netherlands international has yet to start in any competition this campaign. He has managed just 90 minutes from five appearances for the Red Devils.

In our view, United may see Eyong as a potential successor to Zirkzee, who is already contemplating his future at the club amid his lack of regular minutes.

Zirkzee is desperate to play regularly to boost his World Cup selection prospects, but we believe United will decide to keep him for the season before selling him.

Eyong would be a good fit for the club. He has had a fantastic start to the La Liga season, scoring six goals and providing three assists from 10 appearances.

Aside from his goal contributions, he is a powerful runner with a physical presence upfront. He has won an average of five duels and two tackles per La Liga outing.

It remains to be seen whether United proceed with an approach. They may have to secure an early agreement in January amid interest from several other clubs.

Aside from Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City are keeping tabs on the young marksman.
