Red Sox Reportedly ‘Hopeful’ They Will Be Able To Re-Sign Alex Bregman

After the Boston Red Sox were eliminated in their wild-card series by the New York Yankees, all eyes turned to third baseman Alex Bregman. With a major contract decision on his hands, it’s clear that the biggest question for the Red Sox this offseason is whether or not Bregman will spend more than one season with the team.

Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston in free agency last offseason, but the deal had a player option after the first season that would allow the All-Star slugger to opt out and test free agency again if he wanted to. Sure enough, after the season ended, Bregman exercised his opt-out clause.

Just because Bregman opted out doesn’t mean that he is guaranteed to be leaving for another team, and there seems to be interest between both sides in hammering out another deal. However, there is set to be quite a bit of competition across the league for his signature.

After trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants midway through the 2025 campaign, the Red Sox seemingly committed to Bregman as their third baseman for the long-term future, putting the pressure on the front office to re-sign him. And according to a recent report, the team is “hopeful” that they will be able to bring him back to town.

“As of now, the Red Sox are hopeful that Alex Bregman will stay in Boston, though there will be competition,” Jon Heyman of The New York Post recently reported.

Despite battling a quad injury for much of the season, Bregman enjoyed a strong first season in Boston, hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games of action. He also played strong defense at third base and quickly emerged as a leader in a very young clubhouse.

Keeping Bregman around may seem like a no-brainer, and while the front office has cash to burn, it will have to be the right price. Things seem to be in a good spot for now, but Red Sox fans are going to be on edge until Bregman makes an official decision in free agency.
