Aston Villa winners and losers from FPL Gameweek 9: The Polish Cafu cleans up
The Premier League threw up a few surprises over the weekend, putting Arsenal in the driving seat in the title race and giving FPL players a few things to think about.
Aston Villa continued to climb the table thanks to a 1-0 home win over Manchester City and decimated the plans of Fantasy Premier League players everywhere by forcing a big ol’ blank from Erling Haaland.
Shame.
It was a relatively low-scoring FPL weekend across the board as a result, but the points have been creeping up for Villa players as the team’s Premier League form has gradually improved.
Let’s check in with the latest and greatest.
Top Aston Villa FPL scorers in GW9
With a goal, a clean sheet, seven defensive contributions and three juicy bonus points to his name, right-back Matty Cash topped the rankings for Villa players in Gameweek 9.
Cash banked 15 points for the 4.9% of players who selected him, a very tidy return indeed for a player whose cost stands at £4.6m.
Three other defensive players were next on the list with eight points apiece. Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres each picked up a bunch of defensive points against City.
Lucas Digne, Villa’s other defender, claimed six points. Emi Buendía‘s assist contributed to a total of four points while the rest of Villa’s attacking players yielded three points or fewer.
Amadou Onana got fewer defensive contributions against City than he did against Tottenham Hotspur, in case you were tempted to put too much stock on the FPL system.

AVF FPL update GW9
The top three in our AVF FPL league remains unchanged but Gary James collected 62 points to stretch his lead over Warren Torch and Abdelrhman Gooda.
Wayne Barnard and Ahmed Elgharably complete a rijigged top five thanks to 51 points and 68 points respectively.
Amr Elghazaly was our top scorer this week with 76 points. Spurs defender Micky van de Ven did the damage to make up for a triple captain chip somewhat squandered on João Pedro.
At the other end of the table, James Brownrigg and John Mortimer still make up the bottom two but there were big gains for John Rhodes (62 points, up to 70th place) and Keilly Drosdzowksi (48 points, up to 71st).
My post-wildcard rise continues. Captain Haaland netted me just four points but Bryan Mbeumo of Manchester United and Arsenal defender Gabriel headed up a respectable enough 53 points.
Did I leave 10 points on the bench? Not for me to say.
