Former NBA Star Warns Celtics’ Jayson Tatum About Possible Return
Jayson Tatum has made encouraging progress in his recovery from an Achilles tear and hasn’t ruled out returning later this season. A former NBA All-Star who experienced the same injury urged the Boston Celtics star not to take any chances.
DeMarcus Cousins suffered a ruptured left Achilles tendon in January 2018 that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. He returned 12 months later with the Golden State Warriors but tore his left quadriceps during the playoffs.
Cousins cautioned Tatum not to jeopardize his long-term prognosis by trying to play this season on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.”
“I would say, take your time,” Cousins urged Tatum on Monday. “You’re under contract. Take your time, get fully healthy. There’s no need to rush. This isn’t a championship season for you guys.”
Cousins warned that Tatum will require an adjustment period, physically and mentally, in his return from the significant injury. The two-time All-NBA big man doesn’t think the 27-year-old could instantly elevate the Celtics back into championship contention.
“If I’m him, in this situation, I take the year off,” Cousins said. “Come back fresh and ready for next season, and then we get this ball rolling again.”
Lou Williams interjected that, as a competitor, he wants to play if he can. Cousins personally knows the risks that mindset creates.
“I’m speaking from experience because I know exactly what that competitive side is like,” Cousins responded. “And it bit me in the a** later on. That’s the reason I’m saying, take your time … Everything I’m saying I did, and it was tragic.”
Although he doesn’t see Boston as a 2025-26 title threat regardless of Tatum’s status, Cousins still thinks the Celtics can make the postseason without Tatum.
“It’s just about finding that new rhythm within this new group,” he said. “They still have talent. They still have the experience. Obviously not championship level, but playoff contenders in the East? Absolutely.”
