Patriots’ Insider Singles Out Key Contributor In Drake Maye’s Development
The New England Patriots earned their fifth straight win in Week 8, as they handed the Cleveland Browns a 32-13 defeat on Sunday afternoon. Once again, second-year quarterback Drake Maye led the way with another strong performance under center.
It was a bit of a slow start for Maye, as he settled for three field goals in the first half, while also throwing an ugly interception in the second quarter. He eventually found his way in the second half, and he ended up finishing the day with 282 yards and three touchdowns in the air, while also rushing for 50 yards on seven carries.
Maye’s sudden star turn has been the subject of much discussion over the past few weeks. While Maye impressed as a rookie and had many folks believing he was the team’s quarterback of the future, nobody was expecting him to be a genuine player in the MVP conversation this early in his career.
Several of the team’s offseason changes have helped Maye propel his game to another level. However, if you ask team insider Mike Reiss of ESPN, he believes that offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels deserves his fair share of credit for helping Maye take several big steps forward early in the 2025 campaign.
“Another Monday, another enjoyable Patriots/Drake Maye discussion on “Get Up,” which asks the question: How is Maye stacking up against his fellow 2024 QBs? OC Josh McDaniels’ important role in Maye’s development is part of the conversation,” Reiss wrote in a post on X Monday morning.
McDaniels was brought back to town for his third stint as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator over the offseason, and he has helped create a system in which Maye is thriving. With several new weapons on offense, Maye has been carving up defenses in the air, whether it be on short, intermediate or deep throws.
Considering how Maye is only eight games into his sophomore season, it seems like he still has tons of room to grow as a player. Maye will look to lead New England to its sixth-straight victory in Week 9 when it takes on the Atlanta Falcons.
