Insider: Red Sox Would ‘Love’ To Sign Free Agent Slugger

The Boston Red Sox have their eyes set on a free agent slugger to sign this offseason.

Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo of MassLive expects Boston to pursue a middle-of-the-order bat who can be the DH. One player Cotillo believes the Red Sox will heavily pursue a reunion with is Kyle Schwarber.

“What is certain, though, is that the Red Sox need to take a long, hard look at their DH spot,” Cotillo wrote in a piece published on Friday. “A team intent on capitalizing on its contention window will have to make bold, expensive moves. …

“Cora has been clear about his admiration for Schwarber, who the Red Sox love, and if a quick reunion with the Phillies doesn’t come together, expect Boston to show some real interest there.”

Boston traded for Schwarber at the trade deadline in 2021 and helped the Red Sox reach the ALCS. However, he left Boston in free agency as he signed a four-year, $79 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

With Schwarber a free agent once again, multiple teams will show interest in the slugger. But Cotillo expects Boston to be aggressive in pursuing the slugger to add another impact bat to the middle of the lineup.

Schwarber hit .240 with 56 home runs and 132 RBIs this past season with the Phillies. He’s a three-time All-Star and one-time Silver Slugger Award winner.
