Terry Rozier’s Lawyer Releases Statement After FBI Arrest
Terry Rozier’s lawyer released a statement after the FBI arrested the former Boston Celtics guard.
Rozier, currently a member of the Miami Heat, was among 30 individuals arrested across 11 states on Thursday morning as part of a sports gambling probe. FBI director Kash Patel confirmed in a press conference that the FBI also arrested Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones.
Pablo Torre shared a statement from Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty.
“A long time ago we reached out to these prosecutors to tell them we should have an open line of communication,” Trusty said. “They characterized Terry as a subject, not a target, but at 6 a.m. this morning they called to tell me FBI agents were trying to arrest him in a hotel. It is unfortunate that instead of allowing him to self surrender they opted for a photo op. They wanted the misplaced glory of embarrassing a professional athlete with a perp walk. That tells you a lot about the motivations in this case.”
Trusty maintained Rozier’s innocence. An NBA investigation concluded in January found no evidence of wrongdoing when probing unusual betting activity related to the guard.
“They appear to be taking the word of spectacularly in-credible sources rather than relying on actual evidence of wrongdoing,” Trusty added. “Terry was cleared by the NBA and these prosecutors revived that non-case. Terry is not a gambler, but he is not afraid of a fight, and he looks forward to winning this fight.”
The FBI cited a game on March 23, 2023, while Rozier played for the Charlotte Hornets. A starter at the time, he exited after nine minutes and 34 seconds before sitting out the final eight games of the season.
Rozier allegedly informed co-defendants, accused of passing the information to sports bettors, that he planned to leave the game early. The NBA placed Rozier and Billups on immediate leave.
