How much Tottenham can earn by beating Monaco in the Champions League
Tottenham Hotspur will want a win away at Monaco to put themselves in a strong position in the Champions League table, but they also have a big financial incentive to win in France this evening.
Tottenham started their Champions League campaign with a win over Villarreal at home, but the Lilywhites’ performance was not anything to write home about.
Spurs were also not particularly convincing away at Bodo/Glimt on matchday two, but they did show great character to come back from 2-0 down to salvage a point.
They have now travelled to France to take on Monaco, who held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at home in their last Champions League outing.
A win at Monaco will be very financially rewarding for Tottenham
According to Sky Sports, just by qualifying for the league phase of the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur and the other 35 teams earned a prize money of £15.7m.
The outlet says that each win at this stage of the competition sees teams earn £1.8m, while a draw will see £590k come into their coffers.
Tottenham can earn an additional £1.7m if they finish in the top eight in the league phase and go straight through the round of sixteen stage of the Champions League.
Why Spurs need a win against Monaco
Monaco have not been particularly impressive domestically this season, and Spurs have a great opportunity to put themselves in the driving seat by picking up three more points.
Tottenham have a difficult end to the league phase of the Champions League, with the Lilywhites facing Paris Saint-Germain, Slavia Prague, Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in their final four matches.
They will thus need to win against Monaco and Copenhagen to give themselves a good chance of finishing in the top eight and avoiding the extra knockout round.
