MLB Free Agency Rumors: Red Sox ‘Positioned’ To Re-Sign All-Star Slugger

Will Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman be one-and-done in Beantown? That’s what fans want to know and what chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has to determine.

Bregman is opting out of his three-year, $120 million contract and re-entering the free-agent marketplace after a bounce-back season with the Red Sox.

The 31-year-old earned his third All-Star nod while taking over for Rafael Devers at third base. While the Red Sox remain interested in keeping Bregman, he’s sure to have Hot Stove suitors.

So how does this play out?

“I think there is mutual interest in a reunion,” MLB.com’s Ian Browne reports. “Bregman emerged into a leader on that team in about two hours and remained one the entire season. From what I saw, he liked the buzz of playing in Boston and the pressure that comes with it, which isn’t true for every player.

“However, this is likely to be his last, best chance to get a long-term contract, so he has to weigh all the options,” Browne adds. “The one thing I’m sure about is that he won’t sign with a non-contender. This is a guy who has winning in his blood. He has never missed the playoffs. The Red Sox have certainly positioned themselves as a contender in the coming years.”

The big question mark for Bregman is durability. He missed two months of the 2025 season with a quad strain.

Stilll, Bregman hit .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games while consistently drawing praise for his mentoring and clubhouse leadership.

Bregman joined the Red Sox in February, signing that three-year, $120 million contract which includes an opt-out clause after the 2025 World Series.

Before coming to Boston, Bregman played nine years in Houston, helping the Astros win a pair of World Series titles.

He also picked up a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger Award while holding down the hot corner in Houston.
