"What a player": McTominay praises £27m Man Utd star who won 3/3 aerial duels vs Liverpool

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay heaped praise on Manchester United defender Luke Shaw following the 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils registered a statement victory over their fierce rivals on the road. It was their first win over the Merseyside outfit at the stadium in more than nine years.

Bryan Mbeumo scored after just 62 seconds on the clock. Cody Gakpo equalised in the 78th minute, but Harry Maguire stole the headlines with an 84th-minute winner.

There were several other standout performers too. Shaw had a good outing on the left side of the back three. He expertly marshalled Alexander Isak and showed composure in key moments.

The Englishman won five out of six duels contested, including 100 percent of his aerial challenges (3/3). He made four clearances alongside one crucial interception.

Shortly after the game, Shaw posted pictures from the game with the caption: ‘Happy Sundays’.

Former United star McTominay was one of those to respond, he commented: ‘What a player’.

The £27 million signing has been a wonderful servant for the Red Devils for the past 11 years, but there have been question marks over his place in the starting XI.

Lisandro Martinez is anticipated to return to first-team action after injury next month. The pressure is on Shaw to step up, or he could lose his starting spot to the Argentine.

Shaw definitely rose up to the challenge yesterday with a solid defensive showing. Hopefully, he can sustain his current run of form as United seek to climb up the table.

United are ninth in the standings after yesterday’s victory over Arne Slot’s side, but most importantly, they are only a couple of points behind the Champions League spots.
