Something new awaits Man Utd at Anfield in 100th Liverpool meeting

0 2

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, as they face defending champions Liverpool at Anfield.

United are aiming for their first back-to-back league victories under manager Ruben Amorim and their first away win of the season.

The fixture marks United’s 100th game at Anfield, where they have won only on 26 occasions.

United will also debut their new away kit, adding more spice to the encounter.

United have already played in their red jersey in seven matches this season and donned the third kit once — in the defeat at Brentford.

Launched in July, the jersey was designed by Adidas and is predominantly ‘white and light lavender with dark purple accents’.

The kit’s design draws inspiration from the 1992 away shirt — widely regarded as one of the club’s most iconic-ever jerseys.

United have previously enjoyed success, playing in white at Anfield, most recently last season, when they held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw.

Some of Man United’s standout moments at Anfield in the Premier League era came in white. Andy Cole and Gary Pallister both bagged braces in 1997, while Diego Forlan and Ryan Giggs also netted twice in 2003.

John O’Shea (2007), Rafael da Silva and Robin van Persie (2012) and Wayne Rooney (2016) also netted memorable goals at Anfield in white.

The 61,276-capacity stadium has historically not been a good hunting ground for Man United and their recent results there further underline that.

The last time United tasted victory at Anfield was in 2016. Luke Shaw, the only member of the current squad at the club then, did not feature in that game.

United will now hope to create another iconic moment at Liverpool in Sunday’s showdown.
