How much Tottenham have spent on sacking managers compared to Big Six rivals
Tottenham are no strangers to pulling the trigger when things go south in the dugout, but how do they compare to the rest of the Premier League’s elite when it comes to paying off sacked managers?
Tottenham Hotspur are no stranger to hiring and firing managers. In fact, since 2001 to date, Spurs have sacked a whopping 15 managers.
The Daniel Levy axe has since become rather popular, but with the former chairman having now departed, fans would be hoping for a bit of stability in the dugout.
Ange Postecoglou became the latest to fall to the Levy axe despite winning the Europa League last season and ending Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.
But which Premier League club has paid the most compensation to sacked managers? Let us find out.
Chelsea top the list as Tottenham trail closely behind
According to a report from footballblog, only one Premier League club has paid more money to sacked managers as compensation.
Chelsea is currently top of the list, having paid a whopping £156.6 million to departing managers since the start of the Premier League.
Spurs are in second but are miles away from getting close to Chelsea’s rather astonishing £156.6 million, with the Lilywhites paying £66.5 million to departed managers.
In third place come Manchester United, who have paid £52.4 million, while Liverpool are fourth with £50.8 million.
Rounding up the list are Arsenal and Manchester City. The Gunners have paid a meagre £29.3 million to departed managers, with City paying £24.25 million to sacked managers.
Spurs’ recent compensation payouts have been costly
Most of Spurs’ recent outlay in terms of compensation to sacked managers has come in recent years. Tottenham paid a staggering £14 million to Nuno Espirito Santo when he was sacked back in 2021.
In 2019, Spurs also spent a significant amount when they parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino, with the Lilywhites paying him out £12.5 million.
Jose Mourinho’s departure also cost Spurs a lot, with Tottenham paying the Portuguese £11.0 million when he was sacked in 2021.
