Red Sox Rumors: All-Star Slugger Is ‘Terrific Fit,’ MLB Beat Writer Says

Another day, another report suggesting the Boston Red Sox should be all-in on New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.

This one comes from the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey, who called the two-time Home Run Derby champion a “terrific fit” for the Red Sox.

“Boston would be a great landing spot. His big bat and big personality would be a natural addition to the city, the clubhouse, and the lineup,” Healey noted.

“Alonso wouldn’t necessarily mesh with Craig Breslow’s vision of building an ‘athletic, dynamic team,’ as he stated most recently this month, part of the reason given for dealing Rafael Devers. But Alonso would replace Devers as the middle-of-the-order thumper that Breslow didn’t add at the trade deadline,” Healey added.

The report also noted Alonso hasn’t missed a game since 2023. While the former National League Rookie of the Year has been a mainstay at first base, Healey suggested a move to designated hitter “might be tricky.”

“If there is anyone who can explain to Alonso the benefits of signing with the Red Sox and focusing on hitting, it is his friend and fellow Floridian, J.D. Martinez,” Healey noted.

“Sometimes, you just need a guy who will crush. The Red Sox haven’t committed to Triston Casas at first base for 2026, given his injury history, and Masataka Yoshida isn’t in the way of any high-caliber offensive signing,” Healey concluded.

Alonso said after the regular season ended he will opt out of his contract and hit the open market.

A five-time All-Star, Alonso was a free agent last winter and didn’t find a multi-year, nine-figure contract to his liking so he returned to the Mets, who gave him a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out clause.

Alonso, a home-grown Mets star, spent seven seasons in Queens. This year he became the franchise’s all-time home run leader, surpassing eight-time All-Star Darryl Strawberry.

The 30-year-old Alonso hit 38 home runs this season, which was eighth-best in the majors, and drove in 126 runs, second only to Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber.
