Nationals Poach Another Top Leader From Red Sox Front Office

After six straight losing seasons, the Washington Nationals are apparently sick of losing and want to be more like the Boston Red Sox.

In late September, the Nationals hired former Red Sox assistant GM Paul Toboni as their new head of baseball operations, stealing one of Boston’s top candidates to be Craig Breslow’s GM.

Toboni made his first hire this week, snagging another member of his former front office. On Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reported that director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson is leaving the Red Sox to become Toboni’s assistant GM.

Pearson had been with Boston since 2017 and served as the team’s director of amateur scouting since 2023, overseeing the club’s last three drafts. He was responsible for helping draft several top prospects, including Payton Tolle, Kyson Witherspoon, Kristian Campbell and Kyle Teel.

Toboni and Pearson will try to turn things around in Washington and accelerate the rebuild there, which hasn’t made much progress over the past half-decade. The Nationals have finished last in the NL East five times in the last six seasons and are coming off five straight seasons with over 90 losses.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox are replacing Pearson internally. After his departure, they promoted assistant director of amateur scouting, Jake Bruml, to fill his role. Bruml has been with the organization since 2019 and has held a leadership role in the department for the last three seasons.

While Pearson is a major loss for Boston, Bruml worked closely with him over the past several years and will do his best to fill his shoes.
