Man Utd ready to agree new contract with "world-class" star on one condition - report

0 4

Manchester United have not ruled out the prospect of handing a new contract to midfielder Casemiro beyond the ongoing campaign, according to ESPN.

The Brazil international had a tough start under manager Ruben Amorim, but he became a key player in the number six role during the back end of last season.

Casemiro has continued to start regularly ahead of Manuel Ugarte in the Premier League this term, and it appears the club are keen to keep hold of his services.

The midfielder is presently the highest earner in the first-team squad, and would need to accept a sizeable pay-cut to prolong his stay beyond next summer.

United have the option to extend Casemiro’s £ 350,000-per-week deal by another year (June 2027), but they have no plans to do so and prefer to negotiate lower terms.

Casemiro would be a good squad player in future

The 33-year-old has impressed with his defensive contributions for club and country this campaign. However, his mobility has dropped, and he is no longer in his prime.

Hence, he could be a potential weak link against the big teams that tend to press opponents. Casemiro was dropped for the Manchester City game last month, with Ugarte getting the nod.

We could see something similar happen when United visit Anfield to face arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

Still, Casemiro, described as a ‘world-class‘ player by manager Brendan Rodgers, could have a future as a squad player if he is ready to accept the role for next season and beyond.

United are expected to sign a marquee defensive midfielder soon. Based on speculation, it could be one of Carlos Baleba or Adam Wharton, but the club could have a surprise target in mind.

Given the high outlay on fees and wages required, it does not make sense to keep Casemiro unless he is willing to accept around £150,000 per week to prolong his stay with the Red Devils.

With clubs in the Saudi Pro League circling for his signature, it remains to be seen whether Casemiro commits to United or pursues a bigger payday in the Middle East next summer.
