‘Pathetic’: Scott Zolak Shreds Bill Belichick Amid Drake Maye-UNC Controversy
Count Scott Zolak among those becoming more disenenchanted with Bill Belichick by the day.
On Monday, CBS Sports’ Ross Martin reported that Belichick had directed UNC staffers to not tweet about anything related to the New England Patriots, including former Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye. Martin dropped the report after UNC’s social accounts were curiously quiet in the aftermath of Maye’s signature victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” CBS Sports’ Ross Martin posted to X on Monday morning. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.”
Coincidentally (or not), UNC on Monday posted highlights of Maye’s performance. Nevertheless, Martin’s report drew strong reactions from many around New England, including Zolak, who torched Belichick during Monday’s episode of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand” show.
“I want to not believe it, but based on the track record of what transpired prior, and the pettiness, that this is truly coming from the petulant old man,” Zolak said. ” … You’re not going to honor this kid on his coming-out party in the National Football League on the national stage? But you can have him come to your camp and stand there and take pictures with him? That’s all cool and fly back in August.
“This is about as bad as it gets for that program,” Zolak continued. “This is pathetic. This is sad. This is embarrassing. It really is. It doesn’t get any worse than this.”
Whether Belichick truly barred posts about Maye is anyone’s guess. However, the report is believable considering Belichick’s shameless decision to prevent Patriots scouts from attending UNC practices this season.
With UNC sitting 2-3 after five games and controversy constantly surrounding Belichick, it’s fair to wonder whether the NFL legend will be one-and-done in college football.
