UNC’s Bill Belichick Snubs Patriots’ Drake Maye’s Bills Prime-Time Win (UPDATE)

Who says you can’t go home? Apparently former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

“Chapel Bill” has North Carolina maintaining radio silence on social media despite former UNC star Drake Maye upsetting the Buffalo Bills Sunday.

“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” 24/7’s Ross Martin posted Monday on X. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.

“Drake Maye is UNC football’s best asset right now and a massive marketing, recruiting, and fundraising opportunity,” Martin continued. “A top 5 QB in his second year and the future face of the NFL in a major market.”

UPDATE (10:47 a.m.): North Carolina’s X account posted highlights of Maye’s performance Sunday with the caption: “DrakeMaye2 pulling off some magic, where have we seen this before.”

Mack Brown, Maye’s former head coach at UNC, also posted a congratulatory message Monday morning on X: “So Happy for Drake. Fun to watch him win last night in Buffalo like he did so many times at UNC. Love and Appreciate you my friend! Keep it rolling!”

Maye made the most of his first Sunday Night Football appearance, introducing himself in the nationally-televised prime-time AFC East showdown by leading the Patriots to a stunning 23-20 upset of the Bills.

Down by 10 in the second half, Maye led a pair of second-half touchdown drives to steal the spotlight from reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.

Maye completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards, with 146 of them going to former Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

With his fourth-quarter comeback complete, Maye has led the Patriots to back-to-back wins, which is something New England had not accomplished since 2022.

Maye is ranked fifth in the NFL with 1,261 passing yards and is second with a 73.9% completion percentage.

The Patriots used the No. 3 pick overall in the 2024 NFL Draft on Maye after a record-setting career at North Carolina. He left UNC fifth all-time in passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns.

However a shout-out from Belichick doesn’t seem likely any time soon.

Much has been written about the back-and-forth between Belichick and the Patriots, with the eight-time Super Bowl champion at one point saying Patriots officials aren’t allowed on campus at North Carolina to scout players.

But Belichick has bigger problems right now. The Tar Heels are just 2-3 this season and have been blown out in their last two games, losing 34-9 to UCF and 38-10 to Clemson.
