Matt Damon Postponed Filming With George Clooney To Watch Red Sox In 2004 World Series

The Boston Red Sox are battling with the New York Yankees to punch their ticket to the ALDS on Thursday night. It’s the latest in a long string of postseason battles between the two American League East rivals, and it’s safe to say there could be a lot of drama.

Nothing will ever beat the 2004 playoffs, though, when the Red Sox overcame a 3-0 series deficit in the ALCS against the Yankees to advance to the World Series. Considering how Boston hadn’t won a championship in 86 years, this was a big deal for the city.

That included some of the biggest stars to come from Boston, with that group featuring legendary actor Matt Damon. In the new “Believers: Boston Red Sox” docu-series, Damon revealed that he put off filming a movie with another legendary actor, George Clooney, so that he could watch the Red Sox in the World Series.

“In ’04, I was in Geneva shooting Syriana,” Damon said. “George Clooney was producing that movie, and I called him and I said, ‘This is about the most unprofessional thing I’ve ever said in my life, but I can’t work next week.’ And George, he’s just laughing and laughing, and he goes, ‘I already changed the schedule. I know you gotta get home for the World Series.”

The Sox would go on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals in four games, earning a historic victory that broke “The Curse of the Bambino” in the process. Damon may have missed work, but it ended up being worth it, as he witnessed a championship that he will likely never forget.

The Believers: Boston Red Sox three-part docu-series is available now on the ESPN App for subscribers to the ESPN Unlimited Plan. It will also be broadcast on ESPN in late October.
