Are Milan the new favourites to win Serie A?

Milan’s recent win over Napoli have made fans realise that the Rossoneri should be considered among the top contenders to win the title this season.

Napoli have started the new season as the defending champions in Serie A, but the opening five rounds have already cast doubts on their title defence.

During the summer, the top sports betting apps obviously signalled the Partenopei as the team to beat in Italy this season, especially after they invested over €150m in summer reinforcements and even welcomed Kevin De Bruyne as a free agent from Manchester City.

Napoli, however, have already lost two games across all competitions, against Manchester City and Milan, and the Rossoneri seem to pose a serious threat to Antonio Conte’s domestic reign.

Milan, Napoli and Roma share the top spot in Serie A after five rounds, thanks to four victories each and just one defeat.

The Rossoneri beat Napoli at San Siro on Sunday, making fans wonder whether they can quickly succeed Napoli as the Serie A champions in 2025-26.

Milan’s fresh start under Allegri

The appointment of Massimiliano Allegri and the endless class of Luka Modric in the middle of the park have given Milan that extra spark and allowed them to climb back after a disappointing 2024-25 season under Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceiçao.

“Napoli had an important transfer window, and I still believe they’re the favourites for the title,” Allegri said on the eve of the latest match against Napoli.

“Conte is excellent at getting the best out of players. In their last 26 games, they won 18 times. In recent years, Milan have always lost at home against Napoli. We hope to overturn those numbers.”

Conte, on the other hand, replied: “I don’t label anyone as favourites. I just know, and I repeat, that Milan, Inter and Juve, because of their history, tradition, wages and financial value, have always written important chapters in football history. They are strong teams. As for who is the favourite or not, I’ll leave those games to the media.”

Capello names potential underdog in Serie A title race

In recent weeks, Fabio Capello picked a third potential candidate for the Scudetto, suggesting that Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma could be the underdogs in the 2025-26 campaign.

Contrary to Roma, however, Milan won’t play in any European competition this term, and the lack of mid-week matches could prove to be crucial in the long run, just as it happened at Napoli last season, when they clinched their second title in three years with just 82 points, one more than Champions League finalists Inter. Will history repeat itself this season?
