Bucky Dent Has Inspirational Message For Yankees Before Game 3 Vs. Red Sox
Bucky Dent knows a thing or two about the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry.
Forty-seven years ago today, Dent hit one of the most famous home runs in baseball history. On Oct. 2, 1978, the light-hitting shortstop launched a go-ahead three-run homer over the Green Monster, propelling the Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Red Sox in the 1978 AL East Tiebreaker Game.
A big-game player through and through, Dent was named World Series MVP later that month after helping New York win its second straight championship.
Now, on the anniversary of his historic blast, Dent sent an inspirational message for the Yankees to YES reporter Justin Shackil ahead of their elimination game tonight against Boston, which Shackil shared on X.
“Pressure makes legends. Yankees fans, keep the faith, and to the boys in pinstripes: Step up and write your moment tonight,” Dent said.
That includes rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler, who makes his postseason debut for New York tonight. While he grew up a Red Sox fan in Massachusetts, now he’ll try to end their season in his first career start against them.
If the Yankees win tonight’s game at Yankee Stadium, they’ll advance to the ALDS, where they’ll face another division rival in the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dent knows better than anyone that baseball legends are born in October, when the lights are brighter, the pressure is greater and championships are won and lost. It will be interesting to see who steps up tonight and delivers their own Dent-like heroics.
