Six arrested and one hospitalised in Napoli-Sporting CP clashes
Local authorities were called in to restore peace and order after violent clashes between groups of Napoli and Sporting CP supporters prior to the meeting of the two teams in the Champions League league phase on Wednesday evening.
According to the latest updates from Corriere dello Sport, six Napoli supporters have been arrested, and one Sporting CP supporter has been taken to hospital for medical checks, but his condition is not one for major concern.
What happened between Napoli and Sporting CP supporters?
Napoli are hosting Sporting CP at the Stadio Maradona in the second round of league phase fixtures in the 2025-26 Champions League, kicking off at 20.00 BST.
There was unrest prior to kick-off, however, as a group of Portuguese supporters were ‘attacked’ in the Naples city centre around midday on Wednesday according to Corriere dello Sport.
According to the Corriere reconstruction, a group of Neapolitan ultras, with their faces covered by masks and helmets, came into contact with a group of Sporting supporters near via Melisurgo.
The two groups of supporters were seen throwing tables and chairs at each other, and had caused damage to some of the cars and local businesses nearby.
Police intervention was required to diffuse the situation. The Sporting supporters will be escorted to the Stadio Maradona.
Meanwhile, six locals were taken to a nearby police station, while one Portuguese supporter was taken to hospital for checks, but is not in a serious, nor life-threatening condition.
