Aston Villa player ratings TANK after Premier League draw at Sunderland

0 10

Aston Villa fans have had their say on their team’s atrocious performance against Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday.

Villa supporters submitted their player ratings via our AVF ratings form, which we’ll be inviting you to do via our social media throughout the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll share a link at full time to ask fans to give every Villa player a score out of 10 – without a zero because we’re grown-ups and so are you – before adding in my own ratings from Aston Villa Review and taking an average.

These average scores will be used for Power Rankings each month and, ultimately, to crown a Player of the Season.

Brentford v Villa player ratings

Emiliano Martínez – 6.4

Another solid showing from Villa’s wantaway goalkeeper, who ultimately had a tougher brief on the day than Robin Roefs at the other end.

Matty Cash – 7.0 – MOTM

Perhaps 7.0 is a slightly surprising average for Cash given a flawed performance but he scored the goal and drew the red card by having testicles in the vicinity of Reinildo.

Ezri Konsa – 5.9

I thought Konsa had an easy afternoon for the most part, but life got a little more difficult when Sunderland sensed that there was a result in it for them.

Tyrone Mings – 5.4

It was difficult to distinguish between Mings and Konsa in such a high-possession game but the prevailing view seems to be that Mings was too deep when Sunderland scored and who am I to disagree?

Lucas Digne – 5.0

My review of Digne’s performance on Sunday was that he was slightly above average defensively and slightly below average in possession, so 5.0 makes sense to me.

Boubacar Kamara – 5.5

I truly don’t know what to make of Villa’s midfield at the moment, other than the fact it’s a revolving door of players who aren’t built to receive the ball with their backs to goal and under pressure.

John McGinn – 5.6

McGinn has become something of a scapegoat elsewhere, so I’m glad his average rating here is a reminder he wasn’t actually among Villa’s very worst players at the Stadium of Light.

Evann Guessand – 4.5

We saw a few more flashes of what Guessand is capable of but also his ability to be a passenger for considerable stretches of the game. Used correctly, I think there’s a player here.

Morgan Rogers – 2.1

Two point one. Two point one out of ten. The worst thing is I can’t really put together a coherent argument that Rogers warranted a higher rating. Abysmal.

Emi Buendía – 4.0

A four out of ten Premier League performance from a four out of ten Premier League player. There’s some value in Buendía in the right situation but total creative reliance is not it.

Ollie Watkins – 2.3

I’m not completely ready to accept that Watkins is underperforming because he’s got his arse in his hands about still being at Villa but I’ll be honest: I’m getting closer.

Substitutes

Ian Maatsen – 5.0

Maatsen came on.

Harvey Elliott – 5.9

The decision not to start with Elliott was highly questionable and Unai Emery singling him out after the game was alarming.

Donyell Malen – 4.5

I like a lot about Malen but he can control a ball further than I can kick one.

Jadon Sancho – 5.6

On in the 82nd minute, Sancho’s ability to affect the game was quickly in evidence. Loaning him was a risk. Not giving him a chance now would be rank stupidity.

Lamare Bogarde – 4.6

Bogarde was also on the pitch for eight minutes of normal time. Tough crowd.
