Positive Lautaro Martinez news for Inter and Chivu ahead of Sassuolo

In a boost for Inter and head coach Cristian Chivu, captain and centre-forward Lautaro Martinez returned to full first-team training on Saturday, ahead of the Serie A test against Sassuolo in San Siro on Sunday night.

The Argentina international has been struggling with pain in his lower back and has been a doubt approaching kick-off against Sassuolo.

El Toro was named among the substitutes for Inter’s 2-0 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but remained an unused substitute in Amsterdam. He did not train on Thursday or Friday.

However, according to reports from Calciomercato.com, Lautaro did train with the rest of his teammates on Saturday morning on the eve of the Sassuolo match.

It remains to be seen whether he will be involved against the Neroverdi on Sunday. Given the short turnaround, there is still a high chance that Francesco Pio Esposito partners Marcus Thuram at centre-forward in Chivu’s 3-5-2 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Josep Martinez is preparing for his big opportunity to start in Serie A for the first time this season, with Yann Sommer expected to be given a break.
