Trevor Story Takes Blame For Red Sox’s Loss Vs. A’s, ‘On Me’
Trevor Story’s eighth inning home run against the Athletics on Thursday made him just the 10th shortstop in MLB history with a season of at least 25 homers and 30 stolen bases.
That was the good.
Story also made two crucial errors during the Boston Red Sox’s 5-3 loss Thursday, a defeat that saw their lead for the final AL wild-card berth shrink to 1.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.
Following the game, the two-time All-Star shared the blame for the result, while also making sure not to dwell on the defeat.
“Obviously a tough game to lose,” Story said, according to a report by MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “But on to the next. I think that’s the mindset of our team right now. … We spoiled a chance to get a series win today. And it’s tough to win making two errors that lead to runs. So that’s on me. And I feel like especially in September, that’s the beautiful part about it is that you’re not going to harp on anything for too long, win or lose. So on to the next. That’s our mindset.”
Per Smith’s report, it was just the seventh two-error game of the 32-year-old’s career and the second of the 2025 season.
The Red Sox have just nine games remaining in the regular season and are now fighting for their playoff lives.
Boston travels south to take on the Tampa Bay Rays for the first of a three-game set at 7:35 p.m. ET on Friday.
