Man Utd make decision on Amorim's position ahead of Chelsea clash
Manchester United’s woes continued on Sunday with a 3-0 defeat in the Premier League to Manchester City.
The Red Devils are placed 14th in the standings after only four games into the new season.
The pressure is already on manager Ruben Amorim, but the club’s hierarchy are not pondering a change.
According to The Telegraph, Amorim retains the backing of the board and share the manager’s view that the club’s worst start to a league season in 33 years has masked some of the improvements.
The Red Devils have had the most shots (70) and most touches in the opposition box (128) than any other club. They are second in expected goals (eight) and open xG (five) during the ongoing league campaign.
On the contrary, the club were sixth, eighth, ninth and 11th in those metrics last season. Despite this, they have converted just 5.7 percent shots into goals and must improve their shot conversion rate.
As things stand, the hierarchy continue to place their faith in Amorim ahead of Saturday’s game against Chelsea, but their patience could wear down if the results don’t improve over the coming weeks.
United’s summer recruitment has contributed to poor league form
The Red Devils were lauded for the acquisitions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo this summer. Cunha had a lively start before picking up a hamstring injury against Burnley last month.
Mbeumo, on the other hand, has been a revelation from the right number 10 role. He has already scored a couple of goals and almost netted with a sensational volley in the Manchester derby.
While those signings seemed necessary, there are big questions about why the club chose to replace Rasmus Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko when they could have focused on bolstering the midfield.
Like Hojlund, Sesko is finding it hard to adapt to the higher intensity and higher physicality of the league. He should come good in the long run, but Amorim needs immediate results to keep his job.
Former players are already questioning the summer recruitment, and it is justified. The club should have made a huge outlay on adding a quality defensive midfielder instead of another marksman.
There is an evident lack of control in the centre of the park this campaign. Casemiro is no longer in his prime and does not have the mobility to cope with the high press from opposition teams.
Manuel Ugarte has the traits to become a top-class number six, but has been inconsistent and tends to lose possession. United need a better solution in the department to control games more effectively.
Amorim has the support from the board ahead of Saturday’s game against Chelsea. A draw won’t be a bad result, but a defeat of any sort could lead to serious questions about his future.
