Patriots’ Mike Vrabel Gives Christian Gonzalez ‘Chance’ Of Week 3 Return

Well, at least Mike Vrabel is saying there’s a chance Christian Gonzalez returns to action in Week 3.

The star cornerback missed the New England Patriots’ first two games with a hamstring injury. Vrabel left the door open for Gonzalez to make his season debut, but the head coach didn’t sound overly confident.

“It’s a chance,” Vrabel said of Gonzalez playing this Sunday, per WEEI’s Tom Carroll. “I mean, there’s a chance that a lot of things could happen. It’s Monday, and we’ll figure out how he progresses along the week, and we’ll see what he can do.”

Vrabel briefly discussed the 23-year-old’s progress from the injury sustained early in training camp.

“Continuing to improve,” Vrabel said. “Working hard and trying to get back.”

Vrabel made those comments during Monday’s press conference in response to his morning appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.” The former linebacker was even more cryptic about Gonzalez’s status during the radio interview.

“There’s a chance,” Vrabel said, letting an awkward silence linger as the hosts awaited more information.

When Courtney Cox followed up to ask if it’s a good chance, Vrabel changed the subject to observe the size of her wedding ring.

The Patriots can certainly use Gonzalez after allowing an NFL-worst 630 passing yards in two games. Geno Smith and Tua Tagovailoa combined to complete 50 of 66 passes with an 108.6 quarterback rating.

Patriots fans will hope for good news on Gonzalez ahead of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
