Red Sox Clinch First Winning Season Since 2021 With Huge Win Vs. Yankees
The Boston Red Sox earned their 82nd win of 2025 on Sunday night, and it was a big one. The Red Sox snapped their three-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the New York Yankees at Fenway Park, salvaging the series finale and finishing the regular season with a 9-4 record against the Yankees.
Boston scored all six of its runs in the first inning against Will Warren, who surrendered a season-high 10 hits and allowed his most runs in a start since July 2. That was enough for Garrett Crochet and the Red Sox bullpen, who combined for 16 strikeouts despite allowing three home runs.
By improving to 82-68, Boston clinched its first winning season since 2021 — the last time the organization made the playoffs with a 92-70 record.
The Red Sox regressed to 78-84 in 2022 and had the same record in 2023, finishing last in the AL East both times. Boston improved to 81-81 in 2024 and has taken another step forward this year.
Numerous factors have contributed to the Red Sox’s improvement this season, starting with the roster. Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman have proven to be terrific free-agent signings, while young players like Roman Anthony, Carlos Narvaez and Ceddanne Rafaela have stepped up.
The team has improved at the plate and on the mound. Boston’s averaging its most runs per game (4.91) since 2021, while its 3.74 ERA is the lowest it’s been since 2017.
The Red Sox have played much better at Fenway Park this year, racking up their most home wins (45) since 2021. They’ve also avoided the second-half collapse that has plagued them in recent seasons, going 38-34 since the All-Star Break.
All of that has added up to a winning season for Boston despite playing in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. And unlike 2021, the Red Sox are built to sustain their success for years to come.
