Man United planning new contract for £55m star who has missed 86 games in two seasons
Manchester United are considering offering a new contract to one of their most important defenders.
According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, Man United “will try to accelerate” their plans to “discuss a new contract with Lisandro Martinez”.
Martinez moved to Old Trafford from Ajax in a deal worth £55 million, including add-ons, in 2022.
His current deal runs until 2027, but the club hold the option to extend it by another year, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2028.
The Argentina international is currently in rehabilitation after suffering a devastating cruciate knee ligament injury in February.
Unlucky Martinez needs a injury-free campaign
It feels like an eternity since Martinez last featured regularly for the Red Devils.
The 27-year-old has missed a staggering 86 matches across the past two seasons due to repeated injury setbacks.
He suffered foot and knee injuries that kept him out for over 150 days.
A calf strain kept him on the sidelines for another month after his long-awaited return from injury.
When available, Martinez is the best defender at United.
He is tailor-made for the left centre-back role in the head coach Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
He is strong in duels, a fantastic reader of the game, and one of the best passers of the ball from deep.
Awarding him a fresh contract now feels premature, with the Argentine still needing to prove he can put together a full injury-free season.
Martinez is expected to return soon, and his comeback could provide a massive boost for the Portuguese head coach.
