Guardiola won’t demand Donnarumma ‘something he’s not comfortable with’
Pep Guardiola says he will ‘not demand’ Gianluigi Donnarumma ‘something he’s not comfortable with’ as the Italy captain has different skill sets from Ederson.
Guardiola spoke at a press conference on Friday, two days before the Manchester Derby against United.
It was the first time that the Manchester City boss spoke about the purchase of Gigio Donnarumma as the Italy captain moved to Manchester City on deadline day.
There were concerns that Gigio would struggle to adapt to Guardiola’s demands, especially in terms of ball distribution, but the Spanish tactician clarified (via Manchester Evening News): “I will not demand that Gigi does something he is not comfortable with. We didn’t take Gigi to do what Ederson has done. Gigi has another quality. We have the potential with the keepers that we have to use them.
Guardiola opens up about Donnarumma joining Manchester City
“He is so tall, he is so huge,” Guardiola continued.
“He is a big presence on the big stages. He did it in the Champions League last season. He is going to concede goals, but all the while, we will try to help him.
“James Trafford is the keeper for Man City, the keepers we can only have one. We have a season with many games, and everyone will be involved.”
How much will Donnarumma earn at Manchester City?
Donnarumma completed a permanent €27m move from PSG on deadline day.
The Italian captain underwent medical tests and signed his contract with the Premier League giants while on international duty.
As reported by Football Italia earlier this month, Donnarumma will earn €15m in his first season at the club, but his wages will increase through his five-year stay at the Etihad Stadium.
