Patriots’ Josh McDaniels Makes Pointed Statement About Drake Maye

Drake Maye is the right guy for the New England Patriots.

Josh McDaniels seems to think so, anyway.

McDaniels, whose primary task after returning to his longtime home is developing the second-year signal-caller, took to the podium and discussed his overall view of Maye on Thursday.

“It’s got to be a long term vision of where this guy’s going to be. I’m the global view with him… quarterback’s a really difficult position to play… there can’t be one or two things,” McDaniels said, as shared by CLNS. “I’ll never boil it down to that because it’d be doing them a disservice.

“The biggest thing for me is he’s a young quarterback. … He’s the right guy.”

McDaniels’ statement comes after some local discussion about whether the former first-round pick is developing at a rapid enough pace.

The Patriots think there’s been decent progress made, but will continue to push the limits when it comes to the amount they’re putting on his plate — something McDaniels had success doing with Jimmy Garoppolo and Mac Jones.

“No. We haven’t given him anything more than we’ve given him all year, which is not too much,” McDaniels said. “… We have to understand it’s his first game in our system.

Maye finished with 287 passing yards on a career-high 46 total attempts, numbers that present both the positives and negatives of asking a young quarterback to storm back and win a football game. The Patriots’ primary goal will be keeping him out of that position in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins.
