The play-offs are set up as 4 sets of semi-finals, so 4 make it through. I believe it’s all of the group runner ups and 4 lucky bastards from the nations league.

It's the four highest group winners thay have do not already qualify or secure a play off spot through the qualification. Those 4 teams will be pot 4 for the draw and therefore could end up with a "play-off of death". The 12 qualification group runners-up will be placed in pots 1-3 based on fifa ranking.

The current 4 teams that would be in pot 4 are Germany, Wales, Romania and Sweden.

Currently 12 of the 14 nations league group winners are in 1st or 2nd of their qualification group. The two who are not are San Marino and Moldova who won groups in Nations League group D.

They could find themselves two games away from world cup qualification if Germany and Sweden manage to secure a top 2 finish.
