Red Sox Executive Reveals Next Kristian Campbell ‘Opportunity’

Kristian Campbell likely won’t appear at first base for the Boston Red Sox.

Campbell, who was demoted to Triple-A Worcester on June 20, has spent the last couple of months cycling through different positions — first base, second base and the outfield — in an effort to find his way back to Boston.

The Red Sox will soon be taking one of those assignments off his plate, though.

“First base was an immediate trial to see if that could work,” Red Sox senior director of player development Brian Abraham revealed during his appearance on “The Pesky Report” podcast on Tuesday. “That probably will end up not being as much of a focus going forward. I see him being more of a second base/outfield type opportunity.”

Campbell made 30 appearances at the position across June, July, August and September, finishing with four total errors.

Boston prefers to get him more time in the outfield and at second base — the former in which he looks comfortable but is stuck behind several players at the next level, and the latter where he has continued to struggle defensively but could have the soonest opening.

Campbell has slashed .272/.385/.431 with the WooSox, with those number steadily rising since his demotion. The Red Sox don’t technically need him at second base, but Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton are far less established at that position than Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony are in the outfield — so if we’re going to see the rookie again this season, that’ll be his spot.
