Celtics Writer Predicts ‘Permanent Role’ For Two-Way Player
It’s no secret that the Boston Celtics are in dire need of help at center.
Following a stellar performance at EuroBasket 2025, Neemias Queta is expected to get the first crack at the starting gig when the 2025-26 season begins.
A dark horse candidate for serious minutes at the five is rookie second-round pick Amari Williams.
The Celtics signed the Kentucky product to a two-way deal in mid-August and on Tuesday, multiple members of the NBC Sports Boston staff discussed Williams’ potential for the upcoming campaign.
“Williams showed some obvious talents at Summer League, including excellent passing skills on the offensive end and shot-blocking prowess on the defensive side. His ability to improve as a finisher might determine just how much time he ultimately carves out in Boston,” Celtics insider Chris Forsberg said.
“The biggest area of concern for the Celtics this season is their frontcourt, so Williams should get his opportunities. I liked what I saw at Kentucky and think his game can translate to the NBA,” media editor Josh Canu added. “It might not happen right away, but I think by the end of the season, he’ll be a player we can pencil in for a permanent role going forward.”
Williams was acquired in a draft night trade with the Orlando Magic, along with the 57th overall pick (Max Shulga) and two future second-round picks, in exchange for the 32nd overall pick (Noah Penda).
The big man played four seasons for Drexel University before transferring to the University of Kentucky for the 2024-25 season. Williams was a three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year with the Dragons and averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 22.8 minutes across 36 contests during his lone season with the Wildcats while shooting 56.1% from the floor.
He also averaged 6.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 17.6 minutes per game during his four contests with the Celtics Summer League team.
Williams is joined by Shulga and RJ Luis Jr. as the two-way players for Boston next season.
