How Payton Tolle Reacted To Major League Debut
For a Boston Red Sox fan, entering Fenway Park for the first time can be a spiritual experience. For a player, that effect is only magnified.
On Friday night, Red Sox prospect Payton Tolle took the mound at Fenway for the first time as a major league pitcher. It’s earlier than expected for Tolle, who was a 2024 draft pick and began the year in High-A Greenville.
Despite rocketing through the minor leagues, Tolle didn’t look rushed at all. He threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and striking out eight in his debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His line was excellent, but the lefty was more focused on being himself on the mound than on the results.
“I’m gonna go out there and I’m gonna have the most fun on the field out of anybody. If I’m not doing that, then I’m doing something wrong,” Tolle said.
Tolle left the game with two runners on base, both of whom came in to score. Again, Tolle wasn’t focused on the outcome, but rather soaking in his first time on the Fenway Park mound.
“[Red Sox manager Alex Cora] came out, and I turned to all the guys in the infield and I said, ‘I think you guys are really, really cool,'” Tolle said.
It won’t be the last time Tolle ever takes the mound at Fenway Park. His fastball was electric, and his secondary pitches showed flashes. The Pirates’ lineup isn’t the most formidable, but it’s a major league lineup nonetheless. Tolle has the stuff to be a major league starter and will get opportunities for years to come.
Should Tolle stick with the big league club this go around, his next start will likely come against the Cleveland Guardians, unless the Red Sox opt to give him extra rest and wait until next weekend against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
