'Difficult to say’: Club legend already unsure if Amorim is the right fit for Man United

0 8

Manchester United remain winless in the 2025-26 season after two games and the mood around Old Trafford is already tense.

The pressure is piling up on Ruben Amorim, with INEOS splashing over £200 million this summer but still waiting for a return on their investment.

Club legend Wayne Rooney has now added fuel to the fire, questioning whether Amorim is truly the man to take United forward.

He admitted to the BBC: “It’s difficult (to say if Amorim is the right man for the job).

“Obviously, to sit here and say, ‘Yeah 100 per cent’, I don’t think anyone could do that and I don’t think Ruben Amorim would say that himself with what we’ve seen since he’s been at the club.”

Rooney acknowledged that the club hierarchy has done good work this summer by bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Diego Leon and Benjamin Sesko.

However, he feels the Red Devils need more additions to bolster their squad.

With just a week left in the transfer window, the prospect of United making multiple signings looks slim at best.

Rooney added: “I think the recruitment has been good in the summer, but I still want to see two or three more players brought in, I’d like to see that.

“But yeah, it’s difficult to say that this is going to be our manager for the next four or five years on what we’ve seen.”

Amorim will soon run out of time

United supporters have been patient with Amorim, like they were with Erik ten Hag.

The endless cycle of managerial changes has left both supporters and players weary, but results will ultimately decide Amorim’s fate.

INEOS have delivered their part with unprecedented investment, leaving the onus on the Portuguese coach to make it work.

The revamped Carrington training base has injected optimism, but as always, football is a results-driven business.

Rooney is spot on with his analysis that even the Portuguese may doubt whether he is good enough to take the club forward, considering the results over the last eight to ten months.

Amorim has lost half of his last 28 matches and has yet to win back-to-back Premier League games in nearly a year.

His current league win rate stands at just 24.1%.

His tactical decisions have also raised eyebrows, with Bruno Fernandes struggling in a deeper midfield role and Kobbie Mainoo bizarrely left unused so far this season.

Amorim needs to pull up his socks and start delivering wins in the next few games.

If he fails to do so, United may have another new head coach (or a caretaker manager) before the turn of the year.
