Man City and Tottenham referee has an interesting Premier League record with both clubs

0 11

The Premier League officials for the Man City vs Tottenham Hotspur match have been confirmed, and there’s a first-time referee for this fixture.

Following a 3-0 win over Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur are handed a tougher challenge as they face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday.

Spurs’ victory came courtesy of a brace from Richarlison and a goal by Brennan Johnson, while City announced themselves in style with a 4-0 thrashing of Wolves, thanks to new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki finding the net alongside an Erling Haaland brace.

Tottenham, however, won’t fear the trip to the Etihad. Last season, Spurs beat the blue side of Manchester twice. First, a 2-1 Carabao Cup win where Timo Werner scored his last goal in a Tottenham shirt, and also a stunning 4-0 league victory at the Etihad.

City did take the reverse fixture 1-0, in a match that saw an 18-year-old Archie Gray start in defence, but that was under Ange Postecoglou. Now, Thomas Frank leads Spurs into this one, a coach with a decent record against Guardiola: two wins and a draw from six meetings.

Peter Bankes confirmed as referee for Man City v Tottenham Hotspur

The referee for Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur will be Peter Bankes, who will take charge of this fixture for the very first time. Interestingly, Bankes has refereed nine combined defeats for Spurs and Man City, and just ten combined wins.

Bankes has overseen 14 Tottenham matches to date, with Spurs winning 6, drawing 3 and losing 5. His record with City is slightly less favourable for Guardiola’s side. Across nine matches, City have won four, drawn once and lost four (Transfermarkt).

Interesting facts and stats ahead of Man City v Tottenham

History shows Manchester City do not always have it their way at the Etihad. Over the past decade under Guardiola, they have lost more Premier League games to Spurs than to any other side in that period.

Remarkably, Spurs have scored multiple goals in each of their last three league visits to the Etihad. No team has ever managed it four times in a row.

Both sides also tend to produce high-scoring matches. Eight of City’s last ten league games and six of Tottenham’s last seven have seen over 2.5 goals. With attacking talent on both sides, everything points towards another entertaining contest.
