Hansi Flick addresses concerns over Marcus Rashford, FC Barcelona’s La Liga registrations
FC Barcelona’s financial struggles have once again become a talking point ahead of the new 2025-26 La Liga season, with player registrations proving to be a recurring issue. With the situations of Marcus Rashford and Joan Garcia still unresolved, head coach Hansi Flick publicly voiced his unease.
Rashford and Garcia headline Barcelona’s summer additions, brought in by Flick to strengthen a squad that already delivered a strong first season under his command. With the Champions League now the primary objective, the club’s finances are again creating obstacles—just as they did previously with Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor—delaying the ability to register players for La Liga competition.
Speaking at Friday’s press conference ahead of the league opener, Flick didn’t hide his frustration. “For me, it’s a situation that doesn’t make me very happy. I trust the club, but we have to wait until tomorrow. Last season it was the same and it turned out well. We’re focused on what’s in our hands,” the coach said.
While Flick declined to reveal the details provided by the club, he struck an optimistic tone about the bigger picture: “We’ll see what happens in this second season. We’re working really hard, and the quality I see in training is what I expect. The three trophies are not the end—we have to keep progressing. We’re focused on winning every match; we have to play the way we train. This winning mentality is what I want. We’re on the right path.”
Barcelona will kick off their 2025-26 La Liga campaign on Saturday against Mallorca at Son Moix Stadium. Still, Flick may be without two of his marquee signings for the first match of the season.
Rashford registration remains the big question up front
On Thursday, the club announced it would use 80% of Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s salary to register Garcia through the end of the season, after the German goalkeeper filed a medical report for his injury. But Rashford’s case remains unresolved, just 24 hours before Barça’s league debut.
According to Diario AS, Barcelona are preparing to activate new financial “levers,” including €100 million tied to VIP seat revenues and a €7 million guarantee to La Liga to cover a shortfall in their viability plan. The timing is critical: with Robert Lewandowski sidelined by a muscle injury and doubtful for the opener, Flick may be left with only Ferran Torres as his lone forward option if Rashford cannot be registered in time.
