Benjamin Sesko makes history as Man United confirm squad number

Manchester United confirmed the signing of striker Benjamin Sesko before the Snapdragon Cup match against Fiorentina at Old Trafford last Saturday and unveiled him before the fixture.

The Slovenian striker joined in a deal worth €85 million (£73.5m), making him United’s most expensive signing this summer and the seventh-costliest player in the club’s history.

Man United have now announced that Sesko will wear the no.30 jersey, which he won at Leipzig and RB Salzburg, making him the first striker to don it in the club’s rich history.

The shirt was donned by fellow summer arrival Diego Leon during his pre-season appearances, with the Paraguayan youngster now set to wear no.35.

Historically, the jersey was won by John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Ritchie De Laet, Guillermo Varela, Matteo Darmian, and goalkeeper Nathan Bishop.

Fellow new signings Matheus Cunha (no.10) and Mbeumo (no.19) have already been given their shirt numbers.

Sesko granted his first interview yesterday, where he revealed Zlatan Ibrahimovic as his Man United idol. He also holds Robin van Persie and club legend Wayne Rooney in high esteem.

The 22-year-old is poised to debut in the Premier League opening game against Arsenal next Sunday at Old Trafford.

The Slovenian forward missed pre-season, and Man United plan to build up his match fitness by organising a behind-closed-doors friendly against a local side this week.

Sesko is set to spearhead Man United’s attack next season, and the club will be hoping that he can fully maximise the potential he showed at Leipzig, where he scored 39 goals and provided eight assists in 87 games.

With the arrival of the former Salzburg prospect, striker Rasmus Hojlund is now expected to leave the club. Italian giants AC Milan are keen on signing him and are hoping to agree on a deal this week.
