Will Messi face Mexico in a friendly with Argentina? Mexican Soccer Federation denies rumors
The international break in October had sparked huge excitement among soccer fans with the possibility of a high-profile match between Mexico and Argentina, with Lionel Messi as a figure. Rumors spread quickly, fueled by speculation and the dream of seeing two fierce Latin American rivals face off once again.
The prospect generated massive anticipation on both sides, with supporters already imagining a packed stadium and a heated atmosphere.
However, all that excitement came to a halt when Ivar Sisniega, president of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), publicly denied the rumors. His statement was clear and direct, leaving no room for interpretation. “The Argentina thing is not true. It was something someone mentioned, and it got some traction, but there’s no truth to it. We’re not planning to play Argentina,” Sisniega said, shutting down the speculation entirely.
FMF plans top-tier opponents, but not the Argentina
Sisniega explained that Mexico does have plans to face other top national teams from around the world, but Argentina is not part of those plans. While he could not yet reveal the names of the confirmed opponents, he assured fans that they will be of the same high caliber. “I can’t share them yet, but they’re also elite-level rivals,” he added.
One thing the FMF president did confirm is that the team will play as many matches as possible in Mexico leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering fans more opportunities to see El Tri in action at home. “That’s good news for all Mexican fans. We’re looking to play top-quality matches in different cities,” Sisniega emphasized.
Mexico’s upcoming matches
Mexico has already scheduled two international friendlies for September:
- Saturday, September 6 | Mexico vs. Japan – Oakland Coliseum, California
- Tuesday, September 9 | Mexico vs. South Korea – Geodis Park, Nashville
Both matches will serve as important preparation for the team, giving them the chance to test themselves against strong Asian opposition.
Argentina’s upcoming matches
Meanwhile, Argentina will focus on its South American World Cup Qualifiers in early September:
- Thursday, September 4 | Argentina vs. Venezuela – Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires
- Tuesday, September 9 | Ecuador vs. Argentina – Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha, Guayaquil
The reigning world champions will aim to finish the qualifying stage strong before shifting their focus to future friendlies.
