Man Utd & Chelsea in picture to sign £35m UCL star

0 13

Manchester United have had a fascinating summer transfer window thus far.

The Red Devils’ hierarchy have primarily focused on bolstering the frontline.

Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have been signed to strengthen the attack.

A goalkeeper could also be pursued, and RMC Sport claim that Chelsea and United are in the picture to land Paris Saint-Germain star Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Premier League giants have shown a ‘simple mark of interest’ to PSG for the Italian, but they have yet to make a direct approach to the player’s entourage.

Donnarumma would be a statement signing for United

The Red Devils have had Andre Onana as the first-choice goalkeeper in the last two seasons. The former Ajax man has been unconvincing with his handling between the sticks.

The Cameroonian star made five errors leading to goals during the previous campaign. He has just returned to training after a hamstring injury, but could be shown the exit door soon.

It is unlikely that Onana will stay at United if they were to land another marquee shot-stopper.

In our view, Donnarumma would be a statement signing for the Red Devils. The 26-year-old is a true match-winner and played a major part in PSG’s Champions League glory last season.

The Italian made a string of world-class saves against Liverpool and Arsenal during the knockout phase. Without him, Les Parisiens would not have reached the final, where they thrashed Inter Milan.

Despite this, he is expected to move on. His current deal expires in the summer of 2026, and PSG have today made a shock decision to exclude him from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup.

New signing Lucas Chevalier has got the nod, and Donnarumma is expected to leave the European champions rather than seeing out the final year of his contract as a possible substitute.

Donnarumma would be a clear upgrade on Onana at United. He has vastly improved with his distribution from the back and has been exceptional with his reflexes from close-range shots.

He is a vocal leader at the back and would instil confidence in the backline. Donnarumma has a Transfermarkt value of £35 million, but PSG could hold out for a slightly higher fee.

PSG may push for a bidding war to raise the valuation. Regardless, United should seek to swoop for the services of the AC Milan graduate, who is one of the best keepers in world football.
