Santiago Gimenez addresses Luka Modric’s impact after arrival at AC Milan and debut vs. Chelsea

After making his unofficial debut against Chelsea, Mexico star Santiago Gimenez addressed Luka Modric's impact at AC Milan.

Santiago Gimenez returned to the AC Milan squad after helping Mexico win the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup and reunited with new star teammate Luka Modric. Following Modric’s debut in Milan’s recent friendly against Chelsea, Gimenez shared his thoughts on the Croatian legend’s arrival and the impact he’s already having on the team.

Under new head coach Massimiliano Allegri, Milan has undergone significant changes this offseason, including key departures like Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders, as well as several new signings. The Rossoneri suffered a 4-1 loss in Sunday’s friendly against Chelsea, which marked Modric’s unofficial debut.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the new season, Gimenez expressed his enthusiasm. “I have a lot of energy for what’s ahead and I will give everything for the club. I’m still the same Santiago, but with more hunger, more desire, and above all, more passion,” he said.

Gimenez didn’t hold back when discussing the team’s ambitions: “The winter transfer window is tough — you arrive at a new team and the situation isn’t easy. But now everything starts from zero. I’m very motivated and I believe a lot in myself and the team. I don’t make promises, but I want to win the Scudetto with Milan.”

Looking ahead to the impact of the club’s star signing, Gimenez added: “The arrival of Modric, who has won so many titles, will definitely motivate us. At Milanello, the atmosphere feels different compared to previous months; the impression is very good. Allegri is a coach who really unites the team and works with great intensity. From day one, I’m sure this will be a great season.”

Since joining Milan from Feyenoord in January for €32 million, Gimenez has appeared in 19 matches, scoring six goals and providing three assists. Now regaining fitness and pushing for a starting spot under Allegri, the Mexican striker is optimistic about Modric’s role as a key complement in the team’s pursuit of glory in the 2025-26 season.

Gimenez unfazed by potential competition

With Alvaro Morata’s recent move to Como, Gimenez is now Milan’s only natural striker. The lack of options up front has sparked rumors that the club may pursue a new forward, with Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund among the leading candidates.

When asked if he’s concerned about the arrival of another striker, Gimenez was clear: “Am I worried about another striker arriving? No, on the contrary. That would be a joy and a satisfaction. The bigger and more competitive the squad, the more you grow. I will work hard to score many goals.”
