Tottenham fans will love what Hugo Lloris said after reuniting with Heung-min Son
After almost a decade together at Tottenham Hotspur, Hugo Lloris says he is “really excited” to share the pitch with Heung-min Son once again.
After lifting the Europa League with Tottenham Hotspur last season, Heung Min Son bid farewell to the North London club last week, bringing an end to nearly a decade in Lilywhite.
The South Korean forward joined MLS outfit LAFC in a league-record deal reportedly worth upwards of $26 million (£19.5m), signing a contract through to at least 2027.
The transfer also brings about a heart-warming reunion. Son will now share a dressing room once again with Hugo Lloris, the man he spent close to nine years alongside at Spurs.
Together, they played nearly 270 matches, reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, and both etched their names into Tottenham’s all-time top 10 appearance list.
When Lloris departed for LAFC ahead of the 2024 season after spending a decade himself in North London, Son inherited the Tottenham captain’s armband from him. Now, in Los Angeles, they link up again in black and gold, hoping to win their first silverware together.
Hugo Lloris excited to start new chapter with old Tottenham buddy Heung-min Son
Lloris admitted that Son’s arrival in California caught him by surprise, telling reporters at a news conference on Friday (ESPN): “I didn’t expect [Son] to come.”
“It’s amazing to be together again. It’s a new chapter with a different jersey, but with the same ambitions, same motivation,” Lloris said.
“We all know Sonny, how humble he is, how nice he is. But at the end of the day, we cannot forget that he’s a big competitor. He was the captain of Spurs for the last two years. He’s the captain of his national team. He has a World Cup in one year. There’s a lot of things ahead of him and he’s here with plenty of motivation. We are looking forward to starting this new chapter with Sonny.”
Lloris reflected on Son’s time at Tottenham, saying, “He spent 10 years at Spurs; he did everything that he could. He won the Europa League last season. He achieved so much in the Premier League in terms of stats, in terms of image. He’s well-respected all around the world.”
“And I understand when you arrive at one stage in your career, you need a new target, a new objective. Seeing him coming to MLS, it’s great for the league, great for the city, great for the club, also great for him because he’s the kind of example where there are plenty of things to learn from him. The way he trains, the way he prepares himself, the way he competes, I expect him to have a really big impact in the club.”
Lloris also added, “It’s like we never left each other. It’s been one year and a half that we haven’t seen each other, but he’s a sunshine. He’s so positive.”
“Honestly, I’m really excited to start this new chapter with him. We spent almost eight years together. It’s a lot, sharing so many days, so many games, so many training sessions.
“It’s really interesting to see this relation again in a different environment. But I guarantee you that there’s still this motivation, this ambition in his eyes. It’s a very great addition to the team.”
Son Heung-min jokes about reuniting with Hugo Lloris
In his first press conference, when asked about how he felt reuniting with Lloris, Son jokingly replied, “He’s back to (being) my captain, so I have to say something nice about him.
“Because otherwise in the locker room, he’s gonna kill me. I can’t say a bad thing about him because he’s just such an amazing player, but amazing human being.”
It will be interesting to watch the duo once again when they step onto the pitch together as LAFC face Chicago in the MLS this evening.
