Hugo Lloris opens up on famous argument with Heung-min Son at Tottenham, ‘I made a mistake’

Former Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris opened up on his famous clash with teammate Heung-min Son in 2020, which went viral thanks to Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’ documentary.

Heung-min Son left Tottenham last week after nearly a decade at the club, sealing a record £26 million move to LAFC to reunite with former teammate Hugo Lloris.

The pair have spoken warmly about linking up again, but football fans will remember that they famously clashed on the pitch back in 2020. It was captured by Amazon Prime Video and used heavily in promotion for the All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur series.

The incident took place during a match against Everton, just before half-time, with Spurs 1-0 up. Son had failed to track back after losing the ball, almost allowing Everton to score from the counter.

Lloris, angered by the lack of defensive effort, confronted Son heatedly on the pitch. The Frenchman was taken aback when Son pointed the finger and insulted him instead of accepting his fault. The exchange quickly escalated, with the pair squaring up before being separated by teammates.

Lloris admitted that it wasn’t the insult that made him lose his temper, but Son’s dismissive reaction when spoken to. In the heat of the moment, his anger boiled over, and in the empty stadium, every word was audible. The confrontation carried into the dressing room at half-time before the two reconciled after the final whistle.

Lloris later explained that such arguments were part of the competitive nature of football, adding that Amazon’s cameras and the lack of crowd noise exaggerated the moment’s impact.

Hugo Lloris thinks he made a mistake with Heung-min Son at Tottenham

Speaking about the incident in his autobiography, Lloris wrote that “Sometimes, he (Son) can get on your nerves and there are aspects of the on-pitch battle which he has a harder time accepting”. However, Lloris also mentioned that “It’s hard not to adore him (Son)”.

When asked about the incident again last Friday after Son completed his move to the MLS side, Lloris responded similarly to what he said in his autobiography:

“Honestly, I don’t like (the scene). I don’t like the impression that the scene gives. Because in the end, we had such a good relationship. Me and Son Heung-min were very close. It was a scene of pressure on results, a desire to finish in the top four at the time.

“In the end, we were struggling and sometimes crossed the line by expressing ourselves. After the game, the game was already over, and I had to move on. Such scenes are common in the locker room. I made a mistake then.”

Watch: Lloris and Son share emotional LAFC reunion

It’s a big misconception that Lloris and Son did not get along after that fiery exchange. Arguments between teammates on the pitch are far from rare. As Lloris pointed out, this one was taken out of context because of the empty stands and the Amazon cameras.

Lloris has spoken highly of Son multiple times, both in his autobiography and in recent interviews, making it clear that the pair share a strong bond off the pitch.

Their emotional reunion at LAFC is simply the biggest proof that the pair have moved on and are very excited to play alongside each other once again. In the footage, Son pats Lloris on the back and says, “I feel like I’m home.”
