‘Optimistic and hungry’: Heaton says Man United have regained true team spirit under Amorim
Goalkeeper Tom Heaton says Manchester United have rediscovered their team spirit during pre-season under manager Ruben Amorim.
United endured a terrible campaign last term, finishing in their lowest position in the Premier League era. Their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League were dashed by losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.
However, given the positive vibes in training and performance in pre-season games, the squad appears to have moved on from that.
United won the Premier League Summer Series last Sunday to extend their unbeaten run in pre-season to four games. There were also some noticeable changes in the pattern of play during those fixtures.
Speaking about whether the squad has grown closer since pre-season began, Heaton, via quotes relayed by BeanymanSports, said:
“I think from the moment we walked back in for pre-season four or five weeks ago. There is a really big feeling of that, I think we all knew that needed to happen on the back of a challenging year, but we are only looking forward, and so far, that has been a massive feature of what we have had in the last few weeks.
“When the season starts, there are going to be challenges, no football season is going to come without challenges, but we are ready to meet those head on and as I say, the vibe at the minute is a real United one, optimistic and hungry. I think there is a real feel of that at the minute.”
United have been able to strengthen the squad with the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon. Their arrivals have raised the level of optimism in the squad.
United will round up pre-season with a clash against Fiorentina at Old Trafford today and reportedly unveil Benjamin Sesko before the game.
Manager Ruben Amorim will hope that they get a victory, which could help sustain the renewed energy in his side ahead of their Premier League opening game against Arsenal next Sunday.
