Gray On An “Incredible Result” In Belgrade
David Gray dubbed his side’s 2-0 win over FK Partizan as an “incredible result”.
A Martin Boyle brace secured all three points for Hibernian FC, who now have the advantage in our UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie.
When speaking to Hibs TV after the match, Gray explained how delighted he was with the result but was also quick to remind everyone that it’s only half-time in the match.
“The game was everything we thought it would be. It was a really hostile environment, so to come away in Europe to this kind of atmosphere and win 2-0 is an incredible result.
“It’s also just half-time in the tie and I was quick to remind the players of that. We can take a lot of confidence from tonight and there’s a lot of improvement to be done as well when you see the second half display.
“When you see the quality they’ve got, especially in the second half when they threw everything at us, it shows the tie is very much alive, we know that.
“Now it’s all about rest and recovery, looking forward to a league game against Kilmarnock in three days’ time.”
It was a special night for Martin Boyle who scored his Hibs goal number 100 then 101 in Belgrade, writing his name in the Club’s history books.
“It’s an evening he will remember forever,” said Gray.
“I’ve spoke a lot about Boyley and how important he is to the football club; he has been for some time. He was on 99 for a wee while and that was probably playing on his mind for a little bit, so to go and get 101 is a fantastic achievement.
“He’s constantly delivered for the club for a long, long time, and I’m delighted for him. Last season he took on extra responsibility and leadership, and I think he’s benefitted from that.
“He’s enjoying his football and I think you can see that. I’m delighted for him on a personal level and he’s infectious among the group too.”
At the end of the game, the players and staff spent a lot of time with the travelling Hibs fans, thanking them for their support and showing their appreciation for making the journey.
“There’s been right few special moments with the fans in the last wee while. Credit to the 350 that were here. I bet they were all in Denmark, all in Dundee, and will all be at Easter Road on Sunday.
“The supporters are incredible. I’m constantly repeating myself about the supporters we’ve got. They were heavily outnumbered tonight, but from start to finish they were supporting the team again.
“At the very end they were enjoying it with us. We’re all grateful for their support, and we have Sunday and a second leg to look forward too.”
