Liverpool confirm departure of Tyler Morton, rising star now set for first-team promotion
Liverpool have announced the departure of young midfielder Tyler Morton on a permanent deal to French giants Lyon.
Morton spent 16 years at the club, joining the Reds as a seven-year-old after being spotted playing youth football for local side Greenleas.
He progressed through the youth ranks and was promoted to the first team, making 14 senior appearances.
The English midfielder has now agreed to leave Anfield after failing to secure a regular spot in Arne Slot’s side.
Morton had a lot of suitors in the Premier League and beyond, all of whom were interested in signing him permanently.
West Ham United, Ipswich Town, SC Braga, Ajax, Club Brugge, and Strasbourg were all credited with an interest in him before Lyon won the race for his signature.
The French side have agreed to pay £15 million for the services of the 23-year-old, and Liverpool have negotiated a 20 percent sell-on clause to be included in the deal.
The clause will ensure a further financial boost for the Merseyside outfit if Morton is sold.
Lyon are rebuilding their squad following the sales of Rayan Cherki and Lucas Perri, along with the departures of Alexandre Lacazette, Duje Caleta-Car, Jordan Veretout, and others.
Morton is their fourth summer acquisition, following goalkeeper Matt Turner’s arrival, defender Ruben Kluivert, and forward Afonso Moreira.
According to journalist Paul Joyce, the departure of the English youngster has now paved the way for Trey Nyoni to become a full-time first-team player.
Nyoni became the Reds’ youngest-ever player to feature in a European game when he came on as a substitute in the Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven last season.
The talented-midfielder, who arrived from Leicester City in September 2023, is also the Reds’ fifth-youngest debutant of all time, having played as a substitute in FA Cup tie with Southampton in the 2023/24 season.
Nyoni has featured regularly in Liverpool’s pre-season games this summer.
